The head of the European Commission saw a huge potential in the Rogun Dam

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke about the significant potential of Central Asia in the field of renewable energy sources, especially noting the Rogun hydroelectric power station in Tajikistan. She said this while speaking at the high-level forum “Central Asia in the face of global climate challenges: Consolidation for the sake of common prosperity” in Samarkand.

According to the head of the European Commission, the countries of the region have significant resources of wind, solar, water and geothermal energy, which makes Central Asia a promising platform for the development of sustainable energy.

“That is why the European Union is investing in clean energy throughout the region,” von der Leyen stressed.

Among the strategic projects that the President of the European Commission drew attention to were the Rogun Dam in Tajikistan and the Kambar-Ata Dam in Kyrgyzstan.

“These power plants will generate enough energy not only for their two countries, but also to export across Central Asia,” she said.

Von der Leyen stressed that the development of hydropower in the region will contribute to the provision of energy to strategic industries, including the processing of raw materials and sustainable transport corridors.

“They will also produce clean hydrogen that could be sold abroad, so this is truly a mutual benefit it is good for our energy independence, it is good for our trade and of course it is good for our common planet for climate and for the protection of our nature ,” said the President of the European Commission, summing up her speech.
