During his state visit to China, the President of Tajikistan met with Jin Lisun, Chairman of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, in Beijing on May 17. At the meeting, it was revealed that this bank will provide $500mn for the commissioning of new units of the Rogun hydroelectric plant, the press service of the President of Tajikistan reports.
The president, Emomali Rahmon, expressed his gratitude to the chairman of the AIIB and noted that this bank is a reliable partner for Tajikistan, and today’s discussions will encourage further enhancement of future cooperation.
At this meeting, the parties also exchanged views on the allocation of investments in the fields of green infrastructure, transport, energy, communal services, and urban improvement.
The AIIB is an international financial organization founded in China. This bank invests in projects such as infrastructure improvement, and construction of airports, roads, and communication stations in Asia and the Pacific region.
Earlier on February 14 of this year, the Islamic Development Bank allocated $150mn to ensure the implementation of projects aimed at the Rogun HPP.
According to the Minister of Energy of Tajikistan, funds in the amount of $5bn will be needed for the full operation of the Rogun HPP. So far, $3.3bn has been spent on this hydropower plant.
